2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Developer to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Feedback
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified team members about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a more defined vision.
Ismailer stated that the team is now overhauling the project with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
This announcement echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to persist.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a clearer brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to fulfill its potential to our audience.
The belief in this project increases every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. After a period of talks, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.
Ben’s guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having devoted the recent years creating and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in greeting him next week. We are all eager to persist seeing the evolution of the game in the months to follow.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Information and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a community playtest. Initially, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that change every match. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and hope your team can secure victory? The decision is yours."
The game has not yet received an announced release date or platforms, but fans can look forward to more updates as development continues.
