The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
