Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
