A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret information in any vehicles.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to discuss secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He explained that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that safety is a issue in every modern cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
The announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
The broader defence situation underscores the significance of robust measures and vigilance in every areas of official activities, from transport usage to communication practices.
